The decision of a family to take on a business enterprise needs to be mutually supported by the husband and wife. The Normal Christian Life

All Christians are called to certain life practices. We are called to love our neighbor, care for the hungry, poor, and sick, shield the weak and helpless, and to spread the good news of God’s love . Jesus himself commissioned his followers before he left to go into all the world and spread the good news of freedom through Christ.

All Christians are called to do these things. They are a part of the normal Christian life. But so is work and family. The apostle Paul was a tent maker. He supported himself with his trade. As a result, he was able to funnel church offerings where they were greatly needed.

Now Paul was an itinerant man. He did not have a family. But for most people, family is a part of the normal life. For the Christian, the challenge has been the effective integration of work, ministry, and family. It is a challenge brought on by the compartmentalization of the modern lifestyle.

The Christian life cannot be compartmentalized. Family should not be merely a part of life. It should encompass all of your life, as should ministry and work. This is a hard teaching to grasp and is a particularly foreign idea to Western mainstream Christianity. But it wholistically reflects the pattern for fulfilling life that is laid out in the scriptures.

Many will have difficulty picturing a family that is economically free and united in vision as being part of the normal Christian life. It is difficult for them to break out of the world’s modes of thinking and imagine what life could be like. This radical approach to life is uncommon yet it is normal. The standards of life have not changed. It is our culture that has changed.

The family, unified in calling, vision, and purpose is the greatest instrument of ministry in God’s hands. No where else is God’s unity and love better reflected thatn in the family devoted to the Lord. It is the most powerful testament to the gospel in a world divided by people’s greed and self-absorption. No where is the servant heart better modeled than in the family that is devoted to each others needs. No where is God’s love more evident than through the family that can be a refuge to the hurting.
